The 1-Hour Handling Heavy Materials and Proper Lifting Techniques course is a general elective SST course that can help fulfill the requirement for an individual applying for a Site Safety Training Card.
Back injuries alone accounted for almost 17% of nonfatal injuries resulting in days away from work in construction. The number of back injuries in U.S. construction is 50% higher than the average for all other U.S. industries. In this course you will learn how to safely handle heavy or oversize objects, how to properly position yourself to prevent injuries, and how to use different type of controls to minimize the risk of injuries’ from handling heavy objects.
This is an awareness level training and does not provide any other qualification or authorization outside of the Site Safety Training (SST) Card. This course has been approved by the New York City Department of Buildings, and provides 1 hour of training towards obtaining your SST card.
Training Requirements
- 100% attendance of the online class is mandatory
- Complying with the PDH STAR facial biometric requirement for monitoring attendance
- Achieve a minimum of 70% in the written assessment at the end of the course
- Completion of Evaluation Form at the end of the course
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify causes of shoulder and back injuries.
- Explain the effects of overexertion that may lead to musculoskeletal injuries.
- Describe the physics behind the different classifications of levers and further demonstrate how the human body in motion uses these mechanisms.
- Explain employer requirements to protect workers from musculoskeletal injuries.
- List administrative and engineering controls that reduce musculoskeletal injuries.
