Description of the course / activity content:
This course provides guidance on how to establish the cause or causes for distress and deterioration of concrete, and the damage that has been detected. Since many of the symptoms may be caused by more than one mechanism acting upon the concrete, it is necessary to understand the basic underlying causes of damage and deterioration. This course presents information on the common causes of problems in concrete.
This course is intended for use by civil and structural engineers, materials scientists and engineers, construction professionals and others interested in learning about deterioration of concrete.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will learn about:
- Basic mechanisms of concrete deterioration
- Typical symptoms of concrete distress and deterioration, either observed during a visual examination or through laboratory evaluation
- recommendations for preventing further damage to new or replacement concrete
- a method for relating the symptoms or observations to the various causes.
