CE-079 Design for Constructibility: 3 PDH

Description of the course / activity content:
This course gives guidance on important consideration related to erection and construction of steel bridges, and approach to design for constructibility.
In many cases, bridge designers concern themselves only with checking the stability and member stress levels in the structure for the in-service condition after erection of the entire superstructure is complete. But many times the critical stress in a particular component is encountered during the erection of the bridge where large unbraced lengths affect the stability of the partially completed structure. This course describes typical erection methods and procedures and highlights some of the aspects that should be considered by the designer. With this basic knowledge, the bridge designer can determine which, if any, of these aspects are a concern for his/her particular design situation.
This course is intended for use by civil engineers, structural engineers, construction professionals and others interested in learning about constructibility of steel bridges.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will gain the following knowledge and skills:
- Describe types of cranes and other equipment used in erection of steel bridges of various types
- Explain the most appropriate erection sequence for various bridge types
- Describe the site characteristics are important for establishing erection sequence
- List the design parameters impacted by temporary construction conditions
- Explain deck placement, fit-up and stability for various construction methodologies
