Description of the Ethical Issues in Design-Build
The Ethical Issues in Design-Build online PDH course is a part of the Ethics, Laws and Rules category of courses. This course discusses the fundamentals of design-build, the difference between construction delivery and construction procurement processes, the difference between subjective and objective criteria as a basis for design-build contract award, and the ethical issues engineers and architects are faced with when a design-build process is employed.
The widespread growth of “design-build” presents ethical issues for engineers and architects. If these issues are not addressed it is likely public reaction to abuses the process invites will result in the loss of design-build as a construction delivery process. The dilemma for the engineer or architect posed by the conflict between the owner’s and general contractor’s interests in the design-build process is discussed, as are the ethical issues that arise when subjective criteria are used to award design-build contracts. This course offers steps that can be taken by individual engineers and engineering societies to resolve these ethical issues while retaining design-build as a construction delivery option.
This course will illuminate ethical issues for engineers and architects arising from the design-build process, and will offer proposals for how the design and construction community can resolve these issues while retaining the positive aspects of the design-build process.
This course is intended for engineers and architects employed by public agencies and private companies as well as those who are self-employed. It will also be valuable for construction professionals who are concerned with the long-term health of their industry.
Upon completion of this course, you will:
- Learn the elements of design-build.
- Learn the difference between a construction delivery and a construction procurement process.
- Learn to distinguish subjective criteria for award of design-build contracts from objective criteria.
- Learn the fundamental elements of a construction delivery process.

- Learn the importance of integrity in public agency and private company procurement.

To receive the certificate of completion for the above 3 PDH online course, you will need to take a 15 question multiple choice quiz based on the reference material supplied and pass with minimum score of 70%. There is no time limit for the quiz and it can be taken multiple times until a passing score of 70% is achieved
Certificate of Completion
Once you achieve a passing score of 70% on the quiz you will receive and be able to print your Certificate of Completion as a record of your continuing education. PDH Star will keep a record of your certificate for the duration as required by your state of licensure.
