M-001 Air Moving Systems and Fire Protection: 2 PDH

Description of the course / activity content:
This online course provides basic information on fire protection systems and design of HVAC for smoke extract.
The fire hazards associated with heating ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are significant. Fire isn’t the only hazard; the smoke generated by the fire can be much more dangerous. Protection is needed from the spread of fire and smoke due both to fires starting inside an HVAC system and fires starting outside an HVAC system. Fire performance of materials for HVAC components is required, and fire dampers and smoke dampers are needed. To provide smoke protection, an HVAC system can be shut down or it can be put into special smoke control mode of operation. Smoke from building fires can be managed by the mechanisms of compartmentation, dilution, airflow, pressurization, and buoyancy.
This course is intended for use by mechanical and environmental engineers, sustainability design and construction professionals and others interested in learning about the fire protection and air moving systems.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe construction materials used in fire protection and air moving systems
- Understand fire and smoke dampers
- Understand fundamentals of smoke protection
- Describe importance and use of compartmentalization
- Explain dilution as an active fire protection strategy
- Understand pressurization such as zone smoke control and pressurized stairwells
- Use airflow as a smoke management strategy in subway, railroad and highway tunnels
- Use buoyancy as a smoke management strategy in high ceiling spaces such as atria and shopping centers
