Seismic Restraint for Mechanical Equipment

The Seismic Restraint for Mechanical Equipment 6 hour PDH online course is a part of the Structural category courses. This course provides guidance on attaching mechanical equipment to a building to minimize earthquake damage. Many attachment examples are presented, to include anchoring and the use of special devices called seismic restraint devices.

Seismic restraint devices include vibration isolation systems, cable or strut suspension systems, roof attachment systems, and steel shapes.

This course is based on FEMA document No. 412 “Installing Seismic Restraint for Mechanical Equipment”.

This course is intended for use by civil and structural engineers, mechanical engineers, design and construction professionals, students and others interested in learning about seismic restraint to mechanical equipment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to explain and will gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • Describe various types of mechanical equipment and how they should be restrained in seismic areas
  • Explain various types of attachments and their application (floor-mounted, roof-mounted, suspended, vibration isolated, wall-mounted)
  • Discuss various anchor type and their correct application (cast-in-place anchors, lag bolts, welding, steel bolts, masonry anchors)
  • Explain seismic restraint for special cases such as cables, control panels, housekeeping pads and residential equipment
