4-Hour Online Refresher — $150
You can renew online. Your certificate is unexpired, your most recent training included hands-on instruction, and you selected an EPA-administered state. This online refresher renews your individual certification for three years from completion.
Renew Online & Enroll →A copy of your unexpired EPA RRP training certificate is required to verify your eligibility and report your refresher training to EPA.

Choose Initial Course & Date →You must attend the NYC hands-on session. Choose your date during the enrollment process.
Your Next Renewal Needs Hands-On Training
Your last refresher was online-only, so another online-only refresher is not permitted. Your next refresher must include hands-on instruction. You can look for an accredited four-hour hands-on refresher or choose PDH STAR's full eight-hour Initial course with NYC hands-on instruction.
Explore 8-Hour Initial Training — $225 → Review EPA's hands-on refresher rulesPDH STAR's eight-hour Initial course is a separate, longer training pathway—not the four-hour hands-on refresher. Check local program requirements if you work outside EPA-administered jurisdictions.
Check Your Work Location First
Your selected work location may have its own RRP training or certification rules. Confirm its requirements before purchasing either PDH STAR course; federal course accreditation does not automatically mean every state program will accept it.
Check EPA State & Tribal Programs →Check Your Training Certificate
Verify your current certificate and previous course before choosing a refresher. PDH STAR can help explain the two courses we offer.

EPA RRP Lead Paint Certification FAQs
Answers to common questions about EPA lead-safe renovator training, the online refresher, initial certification, renewal rules, course prices, and where RRP credentials apply.
When is EPA RRP lead paint certification required?
EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule generally covers paid renovation work that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities, subject to specific exemptions and work-size thresholds. Window replacement is a covered activity.
Covered renovation projects must use lead-safe work practices and have an appropriately qualified Certified Renovator responsible for the applicable work. Contractors and renovation businesses must also meet relevant firm requirements.
Should I take the 8-hour initial course or the 4-hour refresher?
Choose the 8-Hour EPA RRP Initial Certification course if you have never been a Certified Renovator or your previous individual certification has expired.
The 4-Hour Online Refresher is for renovators who remain certified, meet the hands-on refresher cycle rules, and work in a jurisdiction that accepts the online training. Use our course selection guide if you're unsure.
Can I complete initial EPA RRP certification entirely online?
No. The initial Certified Renovator course includes required hands-on instruction. PDH STAR's 8-hour blended course consists of 6 hours of online learning and 2 hours of in-person hands-on training.
The hands-on session takes place in New York City. When you enroll in our 8-Hour Initial course, you choose your available NYC hands-on date. The session time and location are shown during booking.
Who qualifies for the 4-hour EPA RRP online refresher?
The online refresher is for Certified Renovators who complete renewal before their existing certification expires and are eligible to refresh without hands-on instruction in their applicable jurisdiction.
Under the federal RRP program, a renovator who last completed initial training or a hands-on refresher can generally take the online refresher next. A renovator whose last refresher was online must take a refresher that includes hands-on instruction the following time.
How long does EPA Certified Renovator certification last?
Initial training: 5 years. Online refresher without hands-on training: 3 years. Refresher with hands-on training: 5 years.
The renewed period runs from the date of refresher training, not from the previous certificate's expiration date. Always check the expiration shown on your individual certificate.
Can I take the online EPA RRP refresher twice in a row?
No, not under the federal refresher cycle. EPA requires hands-on instruction every other refresher. If you renew with the 4-hour online course now, your next refresher must include a hands-on component.
Online refresher training is convenient for eligible renovators, but it does not permanently replace hands-on refresher training.
What happens if my EPA RRP renovator certification expires?
Under the federal RRP program, an expired individual Certified Renovator credential cannot be renewed through the 4-hour refresher. You must generally retake the 8-hour initial course, including its required hands-on training, to regain Certified Renovator status.
If your expiration date is approaching, complete eligible refresher training before it passes. See the 8-Hour Initial course if you need to restart your certification.
Is EPA RRP renovator training accepted in every state?
EPA-accredited Certified Renovator training serves the 35 EPA-administered states and other jurisdictions where the federal program applies. This includes New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
Fifteen states and one Tribal program administer their own EPA-authorized RRP programs. Recognition and renewal rules may differ, so acceptance is not automatically nationwide. See our state acceptance guide.
Does my company need its own EPA certification?
Yes, if your company performs renovation work covered by the RRP Rule. The business needs separate Lead-Safe Firm Certification through EPA or the applicable state-authorized program. An individual's renovator training certificate does not certify the company.
Firm certification involves a separate application and fee, not an additional training course. The firm must also assign a Certified Renovator to its covered projects. Read EPA's firm certification guidance.
How much does EPA RRP certification training cost at PDH STAR?
PDH STAR's 4-Hour Online RRP Refresher is $150 per person. The 8-Hour Initial RRP Course is $225 per person and includes online coursework and the required in-person training component.
Contractors training multiple employees can ask about group enrollment and pricing. See the two course options to choose the right path.
Where and when is the hands-on session?
The required two-hour practical session for our 8-Hour Initial course is held in New York City. You choose your preferred available date during enrollment; the booking page provides the session time and training location.
View the Initial course and select your NYC hands-on date. Complete the six-hour online portion before attending.
What do I need to enroll in the refresher?
Have a copy of your current, unexpired EPA RRP renovator training certificate ready. PDH STAR needs it to verify renewal eligibility and report your refresher training to EPA. For our online refresher, your most recent renovator course must have included hands-on instruction.
You must also qualify under the rules of your work jurisdiction. Follow the identity and photo instructions during enrollment so your course completion certificate can be properly issued. Not sure? Use our course selection guide.
When do I get my certificate?
PDH STAR issues your EPA RRP course completion certificate after you successfully complete all required course components and assessments and your training record is verified. For the Initial course, this includes both the online portion and the in-person hands-on session. For an eligible online Refresher, it includes completion of the four-hour course and its requirements.
Your course completion certificate serves as your individual Certified Renovator credential under the federal RRP program. If you need confirmation about processing or delivery, contact PDH STAR at (833) 734-7827.
For official certification and refresher requirements, see EPA's Renovator Training guidance. State and local requirements may also apply.
