What is an SST card?

To work on most construction and demolition projects in New York City you must have an SST card, either the Site Safety (Worker) or the Supervisor SST card. These cards typically require you to have an OSHA 30 card (not older than 5 years), and additional 10 Hours (for Site Safety or Worker SST Card) or 32 Hour (for Supervisor SST Card) of SST training. When to renew the SST card?

Workers and supervisors whose Site Safety Training (SST) cards expire in the next 12 months must complete site safety training refresher courses before they can renew their cards. Refresher training must be taken no more than one year before applying for card renewal.

In case your SST card expires you would not be eligible to refresh your SST card by completing the refresher SST training. Instead, you would have to complete the initial 40 hours or 62 hours of Site Safety Training (for workers and supervisors respectively) again and apply for a new SST card. The OSHA card for issuing the new SST card must be less than 5 years old, so you would likely have to repeat the OSHA 30 training again.

Renew your SST card on time to avoid having to repeat the initial training. We recommend that you start the renewal process 6 to 12 months before your SST card expires to give you sufficient time to complete the refresher training and have sufficient time for card processing.

What refresher training do I need?

Local Law 196 spells out the requirements of SST card renewal. The refresher training that you are required to take will depend on the type of SST card that you have.

Workers Refresher Training (Site Safety SST Card)

To renew SST cards, workers must complete eight hours of refresher training by choosing one of the following course programs:

OPTION 1:

• 4-Hour Fall Prevention and
• 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User & Refresher

OPTION 2

• 4-Hour Fall Prevention and
• 2-Hour ‘Tool Box Talks’ and
• 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting

Supervisors Refresher Training

To renew supervisor SST cards, supervisors must complete sixteen hours of refresher training by choosing one of the following course programs:

OPTION 1

• 8-Hour Fall Prevention and
• 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User & Refresher and
• 2-Hour ‘Tool Box Talks’ and
• 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting

OPTION 2

• 8-Hour Fall Prevention and
• 8-Hour Site Safety Manager Refresher/Chapter 33

OPTION 3

• 8-Hour Site Safety Manager Refresher/Chapter 33 and
• 4-Hour Fall Prevention and
• 2-Hour ‘Tool Box Talks’ and
• 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting

You will get the same type of card that you are renewng – Site Safety (Worker) or Supervisor SST Card.
